OFSTED inspectors have praised a Darwen headteacher for strong leadership and teamwork which have raised standards at the school.

Laura Pooles only joined Sudell Primary School a year ago, but is now celebrating with her staff and governors after the school received a positive report.

Inspectors said that the school, which has 350 pupils aged four to 11, is an effective and caring school, where teaching and learning is good. But there is room for improvement in some areas of the curriculum, behaviour and attendance.

Mrs Pooles said: "We are a very caring school with high quality teachers working hard to ensure that every child fulfils his or her potential. Sudell is a school, which continually strives to improve further, and so we welcome the suggestions made by Ofsted," she said.

The education watchdog report noted the head's strong leadership and clear educational direction for the school which had created a team where staff work together to raise standards and continue to improve.

The chair of governors, Gordon Waddicor, said: "The governors are pleased with this report, which identifies the good progress we are making in creating an environment where all children feel valued and have good opportunities to fulfil their potential.

"It celebrates the commitment and hard work of the whole community - staff, children, parents and governors."

Councillor Mahfooz Hussain, executive member for education and lifelong learning, said: "Congratulations and well done to the school for receiving such a positive report. The strong leadership and clear direction of this school is a testament to how hard the teachers, pupils, and headteacher have been working over the past year."
