BURY'S youngsters joined around 4,500 athletes, 500 volunteers, 140 coaches and 140 officials in making the Greater Manchester Youth Games of 2003 the most successful yet, writes MARC HIGGINSON.

And our sporting talent of the future didn't disgrace themselves as they came home with gold medals in the U-13's hockey in both the male and female categories.

The games were held at the magnificent Bolton Arena as the youngsters competed in sports ranging from Rounders to Tennis, Hockey to Judo.

The Games are a partnership between Greater Sport, Bolton Council and the nine other local authorites in Greater Manchester; meaning all the events were played to a high standard.

Councillor Laurie Williamson, Bolton Council Executive Member for Culture said: "What a fantastic weekend of sun, fun, sport and friendship. I was very impressed with the way the young people entered into the spirit of the event. Whether they took home a medal or just their memories, they should be very proud of themselves.
