The Magnificent Seven -- Xll Apostles, Sacred Heart, Westleigh Methodist, Newton Westpark, St Thomas, St Paul's and St Gabriel's -- were joined by St James' from Wigan at a distinctive presentation ceremony in Leigh.

They are Britain's first primaries to be awarded the prestigious Excellence in Work Related Learning Award from the Centre for Education and Industry based at the University of Warwick.

The schools have used the work and experiences they have had with Leigh EAZ and Wigan Education Business Partnership in their assessments by the University.

Children spoke to University staff about their visits to local Classrooms in Companies, such as Leigh Centurions and Hope Carr Barn. They also showed the assessors work they had completed on understanding about jobs that they may consider in the future and the skills they would need for these occupations.

Teachers, governors, pupils and business personnel were interviewed by the University, who declared how impressed they

were by the work and high levels of attainment. So impressed that thery were given permission to use pupils' portfolios as training manuals for teachers throughout the rest of the country.

Raising of Attainment through Links with Industry Co-ordinator Glenn Aspinall said she was thrilled by the complimentary comments made by the University.

Faith Muir from CEI at the University of Warwick presented the certificates to the successful schools at the United Utilities' Classrooms Rooms facility at Hope Carr Barn.
