Last year First Division Stoke City and Premiership Wanderers were calmly despatched from the competition last term before the Shakers found Mohammed Al Fayed's Fulham a bridge too far down in the capital.
But player boss Andy Preece, fully aware just how crucial a moneyspinning cup run is to a club like Bury now that the competition has has become sudden death, knew there was no chance of a reply after such a late goal on Merseyside on Tuesday.
