COUNCILLORS have refused permission for a new car park, entrance and exit and landscaping work at Sacred Heart Primary School, Colne.
Members of the Colne and District Committee turned down the application by the schools governors on the grounds the development would be detrimental to the open character of the area.
Councillor David Clegg said he could not see how the proposal would make things safer for children and pointed out that it was against the council's policy.
There was also concern over the need to remove six mature trees from the site to make way for the development.
