STAN Ternent hailed have-a-go hero Brian Jensen after the Burnley keeper turned on the style against Chesterfield.

Jensen handed the Clarets a Carling Cup second round spot by becoming the hero in a dramatic penalty shoot-out following last night's Saltergate stalemate.

And Burnley boss Ternent had nothing but praise for the great Dane, who bounced back from the disappointment of being the fall guy in his side's opening day defeat to Crystal Palace just 72 hours earlier.

Ternent said: "I think a word for Brian is due because he was excellent and made some good saves. He is a good goalkeeper who hasn't played for a while, but he got an injury at West Brom and didn't play a lot, so it's going to take him a little while.

"And of course, when you are a goalkeeper and you make a mistake you are exposed, whereas maybe you get a second chance somewhere else on the field. But he showed a lot of character tonight, so 10 out of 10 for him."

Jensen made the vital spot-kick save from Ian Evatt after earlier denying Mark Hudson and Chris Brandon, who controversially scored with his second attempt after the keeper was harshly ruled to have stepped off his line.

But it mattered not as successful penalties from Paul Weller, Dean West and Glen Little earned the Clarets a 3-2 spot-kick victory and a place in Saturday's draw, which does not include Premiership sides involved in European competition.

Ternent added: "There were some fantastic performances and it was a real tough match physically and I felt we came through it well.

"I don't know how we didn't score in fluent play because we had a million chances and we tried to walk it in at times. But the main thing is that if we keep creating the chances, sooner or later they will go in.

"Ian Moore got himself sent off for doing something stupid last season and he could have had 10 goals now!"

Ternent also declared himself pleased with a clean sheet in the wake of the 3-2 home defeat to Crystal Palace last weekend.

And the Clarets chief, who saw Graham Branch limp off with a minor ankle injury, remains hopeful of adding more players to his squad in time for Saturday's First Division clash at West Brom.

He said: "The clean sheet is great. We have played for two hours and it's encouraging. But last Saturday we gave them (Palace) three goals after playing reasonably well.

"Again against Chesterfield, we showed signs. We are close to being excellent and close to being rubbish, so I need to bring in two or three players to stiffen it up and I'm hopeful of getting someone in for the weekend."
