PROPOSALS for a facelift of Darwen's rundown communities will be on show next week -- and Darreners are urged to help shape their own future

Councillors want people to make the most of two consultation days set up by Blackburn with Darwen Borough Council to highlight possible options for housing in the town.

Two sessions will be held at Darwen Community Centre, Knott Street, and Derwent Hall, George Street, on Monday and Tuesday next week. Central Darwen ---including Sudell, Marsh House, Sunnyhurst and Earcroft areas -- has been earmarked to receive a share of the £500million in government cash, some of which is being handed to five East Lancashire councils.

Residents are urged to use the workshops to say what could be done to improve their immediate environment.

Councillor Dave Hollings, Sunnyhurst ward, said: "The plan will look at some of the deprived areas in Darwen. The area around Olive Lane, Redearth Road and Sunnyhurst Woods will be a priority. This is very good news.

"The consultations will give people a chance to see the proposals. The people of Darwen should take full advantage of this."

Council staff will be on hand to answer questions and the event will focus on new housing developments, possible demolition of houses in bad condition and improvements to shops in the area.

Sayyed Osman, council deputy director for regeneration, housing and neighbourhood services, said: "Asking local people what they want for their area is one of the most important aspects of our work as a council.

"Their feedback will help to form a plan for the next five years and could include anything from better play facilities to major improvement works.

"What is crucial is that everyone has their chance to have his or her say in these decisions. By holding a series of consultations we are making sure that every person has the opportunity to voice their ideas about the future of their neighbourhood."

The community centre will host the information day on Monday from 2pm to 7pm with Derwent Hall holding the event on Tuesday between the same times.
