AS A ''Sandgrownun' I got to the stage when I didn't want to have to come to visit my home town of Morecambe as each time I came something else had disappeared!
First it was the West End Pier, one of my early childhood stomping grounds, then the Swimming Pool and the Central Pier and, of course, the poor old Winter Gardens, where I remember dancing with Danny LaRue when he was one of the Ugly Sisters in a production of Cinderella when I was about 13. Finally, there is the Midland Hotel.
The last time I was in the Midland was at a friend's wedding more than 30 years ago and it was getting tatty even then. It was a building of so much beauty and as I was told at school, a premier example of 1930s marine architecture. It should have been looked after many years ago and kept in good repair.
Now I read that the Midland is going to be 'signpost' to a Morecambe revival. I do hope that when I have the chance to call in at Morecambe again I will see some real evidence of this happening.
