BURNLEY are set to land a whopping £175,000 windfall thanks to former striker Alan Lee.

The ex-Claret slapped in a transfer request at Rotherham after Tuesday's Carling Cup clash with York City.

And Cardiff, who had an £800,000 bid for the hitman rejected last week, now look to have struck gold after throwing another £50,000 into the pot.

And that is great news for the Clarets, who cleverly insisted on a 25 per cent sell-on clause being written into Lee's contract when he made the initial £150,000 switch to Millmoor in September 2000.

Record signing Lee, 24, was today undergoing a medical at Ninian Park after making it clear he wanted to part company with Rotherham United to join the revitalised Bluebirds.

The Republic of Ireland international, who still had one year left on his current contract, made it clear he was not prepared to extend having been lured with a bigger salary by the Welshmen, who are bankrolled by eccentric owner Sam Hamann.

Lee's transfer request was duly considered by the board before they reluctantly granted his wish.

The initial fee has been agreed at £850,000, but that could rise to £1.2m depending on Lee's appearances and goals, and if Cardiff win promotion to the Premiership.

That means Burnley will reap an initial payment of £175,000 - a quarter of the difference between the two transfer fees - with another instalment of up to £87,500 should Cardiff achieve their aims.
