THE polls opened earlier today for the Stacksteads by-election.
An election was called after the resignation of Labour councillor Dale Connearn.
Mr Connearn, 38, retired from Rossendale Council, after only 14 months in the town hall, to spend more time with his three children.
Ballot boxes were opened at four polling stations across the ward at 8am and will close at 9pm tonight.
The votes will be counted at Stacksteads Methodist Church. Labour candidate Christine Lamb is hoping to hold the seat for Labour to keep the party at level pegging with the Tories, at 17 seats each.
