SMOKERS have been warned not to take part in an illegal Internet cigarette scam.
Following two reported incidents in the last two days Leigh MEP Terry Wynn is alerting people to the dangers of taking up cheap offers.
He said: "E-mails are being sent to unsuspecting people asking if they wish to buy cigarettes at duty free prices. This is not allowed.
"Any cigarettes purchased will be impounded by Customs and Excise, that is if they are posted in the first place and the credit card company accepts no responsibility for the cost incurred.
"In one case a local woman who visited a tobacconist personally in Amsterdam was encouraged by the shopkeeper to purchase cigarettes through the internet because he said it was OK as we are now all part of Europe.
"According to Customs and Excise this is illegal. Cigarettes can only be purchased in person by the person they are intended for."
