POLICE have released film footage of a man wanted for questioning in connection with a violent and unprovoked attack on a man in a Leigh takeaway, thought to be over just two pence.

The 33-year-old victim had just ordered his food at Krispy Fried Chicken in Railway Road but found he was short of cash.

Police said he asked a woman who was waiting in the queue to lend him 2p, which she did. A man then walked into the takeaway and headbutted him.

He fell to the floor, but the attacker kicked him several times in the face before running out.

The victim suffered a broken wrist, lost several teeth and suffered serious injuries to his jaw, for which he is still receiving treatment. It is believed the woman waiting in the shop knew the attacker as she called him "Danny" and tried to stop him. He ran to a waiting car, where police believe the woman later joined him.

Today, police released CCTV footage of the man taken from a camera inside the takeaway in the hope that Bolton Evening News readers will be able to put a name to the face.

Pc Cliff Bamber, of Leigh Police, said: "This was an unprovoked attack on an innocent man who was simply waiting for food.

"The victim has been left with extremely serious injuries, and has been so traumatised by the incident that he has not left his home since the attack.

"The level of violence shown by the attacker is terrifying and we believe that other innocent people could also be assaulted unless he is identified and arrested."

The man is described as white, 6ft 2ins tall, of stocky build with short dark hair. He was wearing a blue tee-shirt and jeans. The attack happened at around 10.50pm on Sunday, June 8.

Anyone who can identify him is asked to contact Leigh Police on 0161 856 7046, or call Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
