COMMUNITY and civic leaders came together to celebrate Pakistan Independence Day on Thursday Aug 14.

They hoisted the country's flag at Bury Town Hall to mark the 56th anniversary of Pakistan gaining its freedom from Great Britain.

The Mayor and Mayoress of Bury, Councillor Wilf Davison and his wife Maureen, joined the traditional ceremony and later invited members of the Pakistani community into the mayor's parlour for discussion and refreshments.

As part of yesterday's celebrations, local children were given sweets and shown films about Pakistani culture.
