THE horrors of Hiroshima and Nagasaki were remembered by members of Prestwich and Whitefield CND.
They gathered at the cherry tree in Heaton Park garden centre on Sunday (Aug 10) for a picnic to commemorate the 58th anniversary of the victims of the nuclear bombings.
This rounded off a week when those victims were being remembered throughout the world.
The group first held a minute's silence for two members it has lost recently; Mrs Norma Wilson and Mr Frank Allaun. This was followed by another minute's silence for Japanese victims of the atom bombs. Members felt that the need for CND and the peace movement generally was greater than ever, pointing out that the UK's four Trident submarines each had 48 warheads, all eight times as powerful as the Hiroshima bomb.
Information on the local CND branch is available from secretary Mrs Elizabeth Tebbs on 773 0868.
