AN outraged mum is poised to launch a new Burnley "DIY School" just days after the launch of an £80million plan aimed at solving the town's places crisis.

Lancashire County Council announced this week it was to bid for cash from the Government's Building Schools for the Future scheme.

But 11-year-old Michael Nicholson was left heartbroken when he found out he would not be joining his pals at Ivy Bank High School. The former Whittlefield County primary pupil is the latest victim in a long running schools places row.

For over ten years children across the town have been left without places because three schools are over subscribed.

Despite Michael and his mother Sarah living within walking distance of the three schools -- Ivy Bank, Gawthorpe and Habergham -- they have still been unable to secure a place.

Last year, the problems came to a head when a group of parents set up the DIY School at a community centre in Valley Street.

The parents refused to send their children to school after failing to win places.

Eventually all children at the school were found places and it closed last month. But Mrs Nicholson said she is prepared to set the school up again if there is a demand.

"It's been very upsetting. I almost broke down at the last appeal and I don't know if I can face another.

"I know there are other parents who will be in a similar position and if there are enough of us I would open the DIY School again.

Michael said he now feels as though he is missing out on something. He added: "It makes me feel lonely not being at school with my friends.

"I feel like I don't have any friends now and that I am missing out."

At the moment Mrs Nicholson is teaching Michael at home while looking after his five month old brother Nathan and six-year-old sister Michael.
