THE FYLDE Coast's first nurse-led ward has opened at South Shore hospital.
Patients no longer under hospital doctors' orders, but who still need nursing care, are being moved to the new 20 bed unit. It is only the fourth of its kind in the north of England, and is being managed by Matron Jackie Rayworth, supported by a team of nurses, occupational therapists, a physiotherapist and a social worker. She said: "This service is for patients who no longer need to be under the care of a consultant but who would benefit from a period of time on a nurse-led ward.
"It may be newly diagnosed patients who need help with a new drug regime or patients who just need a bit of extra support to enable them to live independently at home.''
One of the first patients in was 81-year-old Joyce Robson, who suffered broken ribs after a fall at home.
Her daughter, Cavelle Holroyd, said: "She would not have been able to cope coming straight home after her fall so this facility is ideal. It is very much home from home and nothing is too much trouble for the staff.
