I AM appalled when I look at the plans which Westfield have for our town centre. They seem to want to squeeze every last drop of character and individuality from Bury in order to maximise profits.

Apparently, their aim is to "meet local needs well into the 21st century" as Bury "is facing increasing competition from neighbouring towns and cities". Which towns and cities exactly? Why do so many people from all over the north west already travel to Bury if there are plenty of these other towns and cities which can better meet their needs?

I find Bury the perfect place to shop. There is a diversity of products and great value for money. If Westfield move the market and increase rents for traders, will this cost be passed on to customers?

How do those who live in Princess Parade feel about Westfield annexing-off the town centre and moving them out of their homes?

Why is the Interchange currently being refurbished (at considerable inconvenience to passengers) if we are to face yet more upheaval when Westfield move in on our town?

Is the planned demolition of Hornby Buildings part of a future plan to annexe The Rock and lock-up another street between 6.30 and 7.30pm?

Where will it all end? Why not demolish the parish church and build a bowling alley there, and put a 1000-space car park on the ground currently occupied by the Art Gallery, Museum and Library? I am sure the Westfield Development executive to whom we are to address any general queries would embrace these plans too, especially since he is in London and doesn't have to live here in Bury.

It will be an outrage the day we let executives from London turn our historic market town into another plastic-fronted, characterless, American-style mall.
