FIREFIGHTERS have issued a warning to smokers after a family had a "narrow escape" from a mattress blaze.
The fire at a house in Tintern Crescent, Little Harwood, spread through the first floor. The family inside managed to flee before the crews arrived on the scene at about 3am.
Leading firefighter Dave Hilliard said: "By the time we arrived the whole first floor was alight and burning extremely fiercely. The man had been smoking in bed and was lucky to wake up just in time. They have had a very narrow escape.
"Smokers should only smoke where they are unlikely to drop cigarettes and should have smoke alarms."
