FADING football pundit Ian St John has whipped up a major storm in Scotland by claiming that Barry Ferguson has made a 'monumental error' in quitting Rangers for Blackburn Rovers.

The former Liverpool striker has risked the wrath of Rovers fans by slating Ferguson's decision to move to Ewood, even going as far as to suggest he has joined the wrong club.

Writing in his weekly column for the Sunday Post in Scotland, St John remarked: "Maybe not today. Maybe not tomorrow. But I believe that some day soon, Barry Ferguson will wake up and realise he has made a monumental error in leaving Rangers for Blackburn Rovers.

"When you are a footballer in the prime of your career, a change of clubs should mean climbing up the ladder, not sliding down it.

"Yet the latter is exactly what Ferguson has done in completing his £7.5 million move to Ewood Park.

"OK, he has ambitions to test himself at a higher level on a regular basis, and the Premiership will certainly provide him with that.

"Taking the decision to pursue his ambition at the wrong time, however, has led to Ferguson ending up at the wrong club."

St John's comments are bound to infuriate Rovers boss Graeme Souness who had hailed Ferguson's capture as possibly his greatest ever signing as a manager.

However, the former Scottish international, who once had his own TV show with Jimmy Greaves, has gone even further by slamming Rovers as a team of also-rans.

"Blackburn Rovers had their day the best part of 10 years ago when Jack Walker's millions caught the rest of the Premiership on the hop and they lifted the title," said St John.

"That won't happen again during the span of Ferguson's career and he should now face up to the fact that he'll be playing for an ordinary side, destined to finish among the also rans season after season.

"Compare that to what he had, and could have had, as captain of Rangers.

"In among the medals every season and the chance to play in the greatest club match in the world on a regular basis.

"But instead of facing Celtic, his derby day battles now will be against Bolton Wanderers.

"He's also turned his back on the Champions League, and instead of facing Manchester Utd, he's off to play in the UEFA Cup, starting against some unpronounceable team of Turkish nobodies."
