MORE teachers than ever are being used on short term contracts to cover sickness and training.
Lancashire Teaching Agency was created 12 months ago to tackle complaints by head teachers of endless hours hunting for teachers to fill supply posts.
But now the agency, in conjunction with Lancashire County Council, Edge Hill College of Further Education and Reed Education Professionals fills more than 95 per cent of all requests for supply teachers.
The popularity of the LTA has risen steadily over the first 12 months, with more than 3,500 teachers and 80 per cent of local schools now registered with the service.
Nina Southworth OBE, Lancashire LEA's recruitment and retention project director, said: "The LTA has brought great benefits to both our schools and teachers."
Schools and supply teachers interested in registering can call Burnley 01282 458 148.
