I SHOULD like to respond to letters (August 1) expressing concerns about safety on Metrolink. In particular we are concerned that reference has been made to the policing of the system.

At this point we would like to assure our customers that their safety is our prime concern and every endeavour has been made to ensure they are as safe as possible whilst using the Metrolink service.

In each tram there are six emergency call points, which give immediate voice contact with the driver. On each platform there are CCTV cameras, which record 24-hours a day as well as being monitored by our controllers and the police communication officers based in the Metrolink control room. Together with this, each platform has a passenger emergency call point for direct voice contact with the control room.

There is a dedicated GMP presence, ensuring that we maintain one of the lowest crime rates on public transport in this country. Police patrol throughout operational hours and also carry out special plain clothes operations. Recently 14 additional police officers were used to assess the method of transport for criminal activity along the Metrolink "corridor". We are pleased to report that no adverse trend was detected.

Contrary to the comments made about the quality of CCTV images, they have often been used to support the police in successful prosecutions. If video evidence is required, it can be obtained through Metrolink, or if the incident has been reported to the police, then they can request to view the tape on your behalf.

We hope we have addressed the concerns of your correspondent. Our priority is to provide our customers with a safe and secure transport system at all times and we will continue to work hard to achieve this.

CHERYL HUBBARD,

head of communications.
