PAUL Howarth (Letters, August 26) made it abundantly clear that he was not best pleased with the collection of the recycled rubbish and household waste in his locality.

Not being familiar with the area where he lives I cannot comment about his home becoming a haven for wasps and rates, but if his local council took notice of Hyndburn Council's more organised and robust recycling and waste collection arrangements and he himself took a few basic hygiene precautions, he might be able to allow his daughter near his bins without the risk being attacked by wasps or rats.

In obviously better-run Hyndburn we have a wonderful scheme where our general rubbish is taken away every week and every second week the recycled rubbish is removed.

Most residents that I have spoken to feel that this scheme works well and that we are doing our bit to help the environment.

Even if people in Hyndburn had to put up with such an inefficient (and obviously penny-pinching) bi-weekly collection of household waste, such as the one in Blackburn with Darwen, I am sure that they would at least appropriately wrap and dispose of their waste so as to prevent such rapid establishment of maggots and other infestations which appear to be prevalent in Mr Haworth's locality.

Where public health is concerned everybody has a responsibility and a part to play, not just the waste and recycling gurus in our local civic buildings.

So come on, Mr Haworth, write to the people who matter in your borough and at the same time do your bit to save the planet by disposing of your rubbish in a careful, sensible and, most importantly, an environmentally-sensitive fashion.

R JAKUBOWSKI, Hawthorn Avenue, Oswaldtwistle.
