TOWNELEY Hall is just one of the buildings opening its doors to the public for free as part of English Heritage's national open day event.

Every year more than 2,500 properties across the country take part and this year more than 800,000 people are expected to visit some of those buildings.

In Burnley, from Friday, September 12, to Monday, September 15, people will be able to have a look round St Peter's Church and Heritage Centre, in Church Street, Towneley Ice House, in Towneley Park, and look behind the scenes at the Thompson Centre, in Red Lion Street, and Burnley police station, in Parker Lane.

There will also be guided walks round Burnley Cemetery and Padiham Town Trail, as well as Tudor games in the Great Barn at Gawthorpe, and a historic vehicle cavalcade, which is travelling from Helmshore Textile Museum, in Rossendale, to Towneley Hall, on Sunday, September 14, from 12pm to 5pm.
