A COUNCIL has confirmed its merger proposals if changes to local government are backed by voters next year.
Ribble Valley wants to go it alone as a unitary authority or merger with Hyndburn should the North West Regional Assembly get the go-ahead in a referendum next September.
Ribble Valley Council decided on a plan of action at its first extraordinary meeting and emergency debate for nearly a decade last month.
Councillors decided a stand-alone unitary authority or Hyndburn merger was the best way for the borough to stave off extinction in the event of a North West Regional Assembly getting the go-ahead, even though Blackburn with Darwen Council favours a three-way council involving the two smaller authorities.
Council leader Chris Holtom said the plan of action was confirmed at a council meeting last night and the proposals will be submitted to the Government's Boundary Committee later this week.
