Sky's the limit as Stanley hope for TV date

ACCRINGTON Stanley fans are at fever pitch waiting to hear if they are to host the Sky TV cameras for the first time in their history.

Representatives from the satellite giant made a trip to the Interlink Express Stadium earlier this week to check out the facilities.

And Stanley chairman Eric Whalley believes Accrington could now be beamed live to the nation as early as October, when former Football league side Exeter City arrive in town.

Whalley said: "It would be tremendous news for the club and the town to be hosting a live game on TV.

"Things like this show just how far we have come in the past few years and now everyone is keeping their fingers crossed.

"I don't like to take anything for granted, but the fact Sky have checked out the facilities gives a hint that they might be looking at a date soon and checking out the games, the visit of Exeter looks like a genuine possibility."

Stanley tasted life in the spotlight when Sky broadcast their opening Conference game at Aldershot last month.

The club picked up £2,000 for their efforts, but a televised home game would reap Stanley a whopping £8,000 and be sure to boost the crowd for a historic event.

And Stanley have been given a heavy hint that they could broadcast a game to the nation sometime later this season.

Club administrator, Rob Heys, beamed: "Sky came to have a good look around and were impressed with what they saw.

"At this stage, it was purely a visit to check where the cameras could go and what angles they could drum up, but we have been encouraged by their comments.

"The guy was hinting that there might be something in the offing later this season and that has really got the place buzzing.

"Everyone remembers being on TV at Aldershot in the opening game and I know most of us got home at midnight and rushed home to watch the game again on TV.

"But it would be something special to have the cameras here."
