BLACKBURN boss Graeme Souness today said Dino Baggio could have a major role to play this season after the classy Italian impressed on his Rovers debut last night.

Souness was at Morecambe's Christie Park to see the 32-year-old come through his first competitive outing in the reserves' 2-1 defeat against Leeds United.

And the manager declared himself well satisfied with his latest signing's contribution on the night as Baggio put himself in contention for a possible role against Liverpool in 10 days' time.

"I thought he did very well. Looking at that, he looks like a proper footballer," said Souness.

"We'll look to introduce him slowly but you can see already that's he going to take part and I think he'll be a proper asset for us over the season ahead, given the amount of games we'll have.

"Don't be surprised if you see a lot of him.

"You only have to look at his track record and where he's played and the amount of games he has played for Italy.

"If you play 60 times for Italy then you are not just a good player, you're a great player."

Baggio, on loan from Lazio until the end of the season, had already appeared for Rovers in a behind-closed-doors game against West Brom last week.

But last night's game was the first time Souness had got to see him in match action personally.

The former World Cup winner showed glimpses of his ability during his 90 minute appearance and might even have scored a brilliant goal but the crossbar came to United's rescue.

In the meantime, while Baggio settles in at his new club, defender Andy Todd moved out on loan last night.

Todd, who recently had a transfer request accepted by Rovers, has joined Burnley on a one month loan.

The player wanted a move after he had slipped further down the pecking order at Ewood following the recent signing of Markus Babbel from Liverpool.

And Souness believes the 28-year-old will do a decent job for the Clarets.

"Andy wanted to play football," said the Rovers boss.

"Once we declared our intention to sign Markus Babbel he obviously felt that was going to limit his chances.

"He saw limited opportunities here which is why he wanted a move and I think he'll do a very good job for Burnley."

Meanwhile, Blackburn's scheduled Premier League game against Fulham has been put back 24 hours and will now take place on Sunday September 28 with a 3pm kick-off due to Rovers' involvement in the UEFA Cup first round.

Club secretary Tom Finn and safety officer John Newsham headed out to Turkey today for a meeting with officials from Gencerbirlingi ahead of Rovers' UEFA Cup clash there on September 24.
