THE funeral of a veteran of the first Gulf War is to be held on Friday, more than 30 days after he died.

Mr Ian Gray (34) was found in Church Street East, Radcliffe, on July 19 and died in hospital the following day.

Although police ruled out any suspicious circumstances in his death, they launched an appeal to trace a man who was seen arguing with Mr Gray, of River Street, Radcliffe, moments before he was discovered in a semi-conscious state.

Detective Sergeant Lynn Vernon of Whitefield CID said this week: "Following the appeal in the Radcliffe Times, the man who had been seen with Mr Gray the night he collapsed came forward. His help enabled us to close our investigation into Mr Gray's death."

A postmortem revealed that Mr Gray died from multiple organ failure.

The funeral service for the former Royal Regiment of Fusiliers soldier will take place at Rochdale Crematorium at 1.40pm. At one time Mr Gray worked as a security guard at the Bury Times.
