HOPES of finding a Darwen woman who went missing on a Greek island are fading by the day after a senior policeman failed to uncover any new leads.

Yvonne Heys, 51, of Darwen, disappeared on July 25 after telling a friend she was going for a swim in the sea at the Afandou resort, Rhodes.

Supt Andy Rhodes of Lancashire Police was on the island last weekend helping local police crack down on British tourists - whose drunken behaviour was getting out of hand.

And the detective leading the investigation into Yvonne's disappearance, Det Insp Simon Giles of Accrington CID, asked him to carry out a few inquiries while he was there.

DI Giles said Supt Rhodes spoke to local police who confirmed they had carried out all lines of inquiry but no new information had turned up.

He added: "We've not given up hope of finding Yvonne but with each passing day it's less and less likely we'll find her safe and well.

"We've taken across another batch of posters which added to ones we have sent to the Consulate and the tour operator Yvonne booked with, the resort should be awash."

Two British detectives have also been helping the investigation. The officers, from New Scotland Yard and the Metropolitan Police, have been carrying out inquiries and help Lancashire Police liaise with their Greek counterparts.

Miss Heys' family, including sisters Vanessa O'Rourke, of Baxenden, and Angela Smith, of Accrington, are being updated regularly by DI Giles on how the investigation is going.

Miss Heys, a diagnosed schizophrenic, was on holiday with a friend when she said she was off for a swim. She did not return for a planned dinner date that evening, sparking the search which has so far turned up no clues.

Miss Heys, 51, of Pickup Bank, was diagnosed with schizophrenia about 20 years and police are concerned that since she went missing she did not have her medication with her. She also had no money.

Anyone with information is asked to call Accrington CID on 01254 353743.
