BIRTHDAY boy Daniel Andrews spent three days fighting for his life in hospital after running into the path of a car as he fled a baseball bat attack.

But the teenager, who had celebrated his 18th birthday the day before, could face charges in relation to the incident in Radcliffe last Thursday night (Aug 28) .

His mother, Isabell, claimed she had been told charges may be levelled against her son by his attackers, whose actions were said to have forced Daniel into Bury Road.

She said: "Daniel was nearly killed, yet he was the one who was beaten with a baseball bat in an unprovoked attack and now he could face charges of assault."

Daniel, of South Bank Road, Bury, was going to pick up a birthday card from his aunt's house in Olsberg Close, Radcliffe, on Thursday at 9.30pm when he became involved in an argument and then a scuffle with a young male.

His mother said Daniel told her he was then attacked by a woman with a baseball bat and was struck across the head, shoulders and legs before he fled into the road.

He was hit by a Toyota Corina driven by a 20-year-old woman and suffered severe head and chest injuries. He was taken to Fairfield General Hospital and transferred to the intensive care unit at the Royal Oldham Hospital where he remained on life support until Sunday (Aug 31). He was returned to Fairfield but he discharged himself on Monday.

The former St Gabriel's RC High School pupil is recovering at home from his traumatic ordeal.

His mother said she would pursue the complaint with police against his attackers, despite the threat that Daniel may also face charges of assault.

"We will not back down. People cannot go around whacking others with baseball bats," she said.

Residents reported a disturbance in the street seconds before the road accident.

Whitefield CID was unavailable for comment.
