LIGHTS, camera, action! Lytham Film Society is counting down to its 56th year with a planned programme of films from all over the globe.

"For over half a century the society has been bringing award winning films that you hear about but never see in the mainstream cinema," said society spokesman, Will Nunez.

"Only with the advent of DVD are these films becoming accessible. Even so they still deserve a viewing on the big screen and that's what the film society is here for."

The society's 2003/2004 season will start with 'a classic Kurosawa movie from 1952', Ikuru. Other planned films include City of God, The Warrior, Italian for Beginners, Balzac and the Little Chinese Seamstress.

"Again this year we are lucky enough to obtain a recent film from China courtesy of the Chinese Embassy for one of our evenings and combining the film with a meal at a Lytham Chinese restaurant adds to the theme," said Will.

"And this year we will be joining forces with the Lytham Dance Festival to show the acclaimed Baz Lhurmann's Moulin Rouge."

The society meets fortnightly at Lytham Assembly Rooms on Monday evenings and a newsletter -- including programme notes and information on both Fylde Art and British Federation of Film Society events -- is provided at most meetings.

Membership of the society is £40 for the full season or £25 for the half, with guests able to attend at £4.50 per film. Concession rates for students or block bookings are also available.
