I WAS incensed to read the recent letter from B. Serious (August 28) about so-called lazy nurses.
In my experience (and I have recently had quite a lot to do with hospitals) nurses are angels. They work very hard with dedication and patience. If one is lying awake at night in hospital, a kind word and a cup of tea, if a nurse has time, works wonders.
Of course, as with any other profession, there are the odd ones who don't measure up to the normal high standards but generally nurses, teachers, social workers and the police are undervalued by society.
In any exchange between human beings, it helps to get a positive response if you smile and show some appreciation.
And why, if B. Serious has a genuine point to make, why does he/she not give a name?
