THE Deputy Prime Minister was today travelling to the North West to spark interest in the regional assembly debate.

John Prescott was arriving in Warrington to raise awareness and spark debate about plans for a North West government.

A 'Your Say' campaign was also being launched to bolster Mr Prescott's crusade to devolve government to the regions.

A vote is due to be held next autumn when voters in East Lancashire will be asked if they want an assembly and how councils should be re-organised to fit into a new authority.

Councils have already drawn up proposals which include Blackburn with Darwen's wish to merge with Hyndburn and the Ribble Valley.

Mr Prescott said: "This is an important decision for the people of the North West. It is vital we fully explain what an assembly would mean for the region and its people.

"I'm confident today's launch will bring the debate to the people, raise awareness and encourage people to have their say."
