HEALTH inspectors are warning against "fishy" smoked mackerel which could give people food poisoning.
The mackerel has been on sale in the Booths chain of supermarkets in the north west and has not been properly smoked.
While there are no Booths outlets in the borough, Bury Council says people may have bought from the company's shops elsewhere in the region: four people from Lancashire have suffered food poisoning after eating mackerel bought from the chain.
The product, which has been withdrawn, comes vacuum-packed and is labelled on the plastic pack as Booths Smoked Mackerel. It has a use-by date of November 2, and is marked as being suitable for home freezing. The council's environmental health team says anyone who has this fish should throw it away.
Manufacturer C&G Neve blames a production fault that smoked the fish at a temperature too low to kill bacteria.
