A MAN hailed for 'saving Christmas in York' is bringing his magical touring grotto home to Preston for this year's festivities.

Graham Fisher was drafted in to the historic centre of York two years ago after a campaign to bring Christmas attractions back to the city.

Now the show organiser has been called upon to work his magic in Preston.

The £80,000 Christmas Wonderland will be unveiled when the festive lights are switched on in the Flag Market on November 19.

And the City Centre Management Team which was responsible for bringing the colourful entourage to Preston, reckons it will make a world of difference to the centre.

Marketing manager Anne-Marie Flynn said: "This is a unique visitor attraction for families to enjoy. We are delighted that Graham has chosen Preston after the success of the grotto in York.

"It will provide a place for parents and children to visit while doing their Christmas shopping and really bring a festive atmosphere to England's newest city."

The children's fantasy world, with its animated elves, eskimos and penguins, was dreamed up by Graham three years ago.

Graham, 43, of Fulwood, works around the country organising It's a Knockout events for charities, but because it is seasonal work he wanted something to fill his time in the winter months.

And he is delighted to be bringing it to his home town together with a 40ft high snowman and a set of Italian carousel horses.

The father-of-two said: "It will be a very special occasion. It's great to be in Preston. We've had invitations from London to Scotland but we wanted to stay at home."

But not everyone is happy about it. York city officials were sorry to see their Christmas saviour move on.

Paul Barrett, York city centre manager, said: "We are disappointed we have lost it this year. It did kick start the Christmas situation in York, which was getting a bit tired and stale."

The multi-roomed grotto has created a lot of interest nationally.

Graham said: "Last year we were invited on to GMTV where Father Christmas presented the weather."

Though the details have not yet been finalised, Graham said he is in talks with Father Christmas who is hoping to make a special entrance at the big switch-on.

Santa will then be around Preston until Christmas giving out presents to children who visit him.

The grotto is being sponsored by UK Spar distributors, James Hall & Co (Southport) Ltd and Preston Learning Together Partnership, which promotes lifelong learning for parents and children.

Partnership manager Elaine Eaves said: "The Christmas Wonderland will provide a family day out for people all over Lancashire."

Preston North End first team players will be accompanying the Deepdale Duck, stars of the Charter Theatre's production of Aladdin and local performer Stephen Bayliss, winner of BBC's Search for a Star competition, for the switch on from 6pm.
