NELSON'S Civic Theatre could be revamped and transformed into a 'premier' community facility if funding is secured.

The issue was discussed at last night's Nelson Committee meeting after supporters of the theatre called for action to save the building amid fears in could be closed down.

Nelson Labour councillors led by Asjad Mahmood and Neil Akrigg are set to launch the Save the Civic Theatre campaign in a bid to save one of town's landmark buildings.

Councillors said they were opposed to seeing the facility axed and discussed ways in which to secure funding to save the former Sunday school building in Stanley Street.

The theatre is used by a number of groups including pensioners' luncheon clubs and drama clubs but is in need of a major refurbishment, including repairs to the roof and drains.

But there are fears that it close close completely if grants are not found.

A spokesman for Pendle council said: "It was agreed that the executive be asked to note the committee's reaction to oppose any closure of the Civic Theatre and to make it into a premier development to seek funding to make it into a first class community building for the area.

"There was talk about looking at applying for funding from the Children's Fund and Single Regeneration Budget money.

"It is in need of a lot of repair work which may be put on hold until while further funding is found."
