THE organiser of one of East Lancashire's biggest Bonfire Night displays today called for the private sale of fireworks to be banned.
David Whipp, the leader of Barnoldswick town council, said the sale of fireworks to members of the public resulted in far too many injuries and too much nuisance every year for it to be justified.
His comments came as Barnoldswick celebrated Bonfire Night early this year with a £15,000 fireworks spectacular on Sunday.
He said: "The fireworks available to the general public today are far too dangerous and cause too much nuisance and should be banned.
"There is no reason why the sale of fireworks should not be kept to organised displays where they can be regulated and safety precautions can be taken."
Hundreds of people turned out to enjoy the special effects and fireworks at Victory Park, along with local children dressed as cats. The event was organised by Barnoldswick Town Council and featured a special bugs bonfire with incendiary devices built into its structure to ensure a spectacular blaze.
