PARK right, or next time you'll be fined, Blackpool's new parking attendants are warning drivers.

The 24 attendants, employed by Blackpool Borough Council, will be out and about over the next week leaving warning notices on illegally parked vehicles -- telling drivers that next time they could be fined up to £60.

The warnings are part of the run-up to the launch of the council's new ParkRite scheme, which starts on November 10, when Lancashire Constabulary's traffic wardens will be replaced by the council's parking attendants.

"Blackpool Borough Council is determined to reduce inconsiderate, illegal parking and make Blackpool's roads safer for motorists and pedestrians alike. It is particularly keen to improve safety around our schools where inconsiderate parking is putting children's lives at risk," said a council spokeswoman. She said adverts about the new scheme will be appearing on the backs of buses and in newspapers and on the radio, following on from a leaflet drop through Blackpool's letterboxes in September.

Until November 10, motorists can still expect to face fines as police traffic wardens will still be working alongside their new counterparts, she added.

Cllr Fred Jackson, the council's portfolio holder for urban regeneration, said: "Those who park legally have nothing to fear from the changes and will notice no difference.

"The main purposes of ParkRite are to make our roads safer, keep the traffic flowing and improve the environment."

And the council warned that, even though attendants are not yet issuing fines, police traffic wardens will continue work as normal until November 10.
