PUPILS are turning the borough yellow in a bid to protect the countryside.
Local schools are competing in this year's Yellow Woods Challenge, a national campaign run by Yellow Pages, the Directory Recycling Scheme and the Woodland Trust working with Bury Council.
They are bringing old Yellow Pages to school for recycling, and those who collect the most will win cash prizes: £300 locally, with a chance to compete nationally for £2,000. For every pound awarded by Yellow Pages, a matching pound is given to the Woodland Trust.
This year's challenge was launched by children from Sunnybank Primary School in Unsworth. Schools have until December 14 to bring in directories.
Old directories can also be recycled at Kwik Save (Ramsbottom), Robin Hood car park (Tottington), the Longfield Centre (Prestwich), Upper Wilton Street (Prestwich), Asda (Pilsworth), Elm Street car park (Whitefield), Fountain Place (off Higher Lane, Whitefield) and Quarry Street (Radcliffe).
