STAN Ternent has ended Gareth Farrelly's loan spell at Turf Moor two weeks early.

Bolton midfielder Farrelly has struggled to make any real impact during nearly three months on loan from the Premiership outfit.

A virus struck seven games in to wreck any hope of the Irishman impressing Ternent and perhaps earning a long-term deal with the Clarets.

And Farrelly last night packed his boots and returned to the Reebok after the Clarets chief called time on the deal.

"I've let Gareth go back early," Ternent confirmed. "His loan spell was up at the end of the month anyhow and I don't think it has really worked out for him here at Burnley.

"He has struggled a bit with injury and illness, but I thank him for his efforts and wish him well back at Bolton."

Farrelly started the last two games for Burnley, at Sheffield United and Derby last Saturday.

However, he was replaced by skipper Graham Branch at Pride Park after another below-par display in his final game for the club, having made 14 appearances - four as a recent substitute.

Farrelly's Bolton team mate Delroy Facey, currently sidelined through injury, remains at Turf Moor for the rest of his loan spell, which expires following the tip to Sunderland in 12 days time.
