DAVE Edmundson has promised to go not just an extra mile for his football club - but an extra 500!

For the Clarets chief executive has changed the club's pitch entry anthem to the Proclaimer's singalong hit 'I'm Gonna Be (500 miles)'.

In a bid to boost match-day morale at the Division One club, Blackburn-born Dave decided players and fans needed an uplifting tune.

So out has gone Elevation by U2 and in has come the Scottish twins' 1988 hit.

But Blackburn Rovers fans have ridiculed the Clarets' choice of tune and say they are still a division behind when it comes to their choice of music.

And spokesman for the Ewood Park club, who use Europe's A Final Countdown as the side runs on to the pitch, said a meeting to discuss the choice of music will be held next week.

At Burnley Dave said: "When I went to Wolverhampton for the recent Carling Cup game, they sang 'Hi Ho, Silver Lining' and it seemed to me there was a great atmosphere.

"There are comments about a lack of atmosphere inside Turf Moor. I know it upsets some of the traditionalists and it will not be popular in some areas, but we've changed the lyrics a bit and we're hoping The Proclaimers song will become a real Burnley anthem."

The new anthem will be sung before Saturday's match with Rotherham United by local celebrity Geoff Brown, from TV's Safestyle UK advert.

Paul Smith, of Boundary Clarets, reckons the club needs more than a change of anthem.

He said: "Help by The Beatles would be more appropriate at the moment!

"The Proclaimers song is a bit so-so, but we will try anything now."

Rovers fans have their own ideas about what the Clarets - and their own team - should come out to.

Stephanie Thompson, 50, a GP's receptionist, of Whitehall, Darwen, said: "I think the only tune Burnley should be coming out to is the theme for Emmerdale because the first thing you think of when you think of Burnley is the Dingles.

"A good one for Rovers would be Robbie Williams' Let Me Entertain You."
