RAMSBOTTOM United could be days away from announcing their new manager.

A decision on who will take over the first team reins following Andy Grimshaw's decision to resign two weeks ago is expected to be made at a meeting tomorrow night.

Work commitments forced Grimshaw into leaving the Riverside and a number of candidates have shown interest in the post, the most high-profile being ex-Bolton and Wales goalkeeper Dave Felgate.

Also in the frame is caretaker boss Ged Walsh who will have done his chances no harm with crucial victories in the last seven days.

Last Tuesday night the Rams defeated UniBond Premier side Barrow 3-2 in the Marsden Lancashire Trophy and followed up on Saturday with a league win over St Helens Town (see page 31).

Off the field, the North West Counties side received a double blow last week when vice-chairman Ian McCool resigned and Kath Smith of major sponsors P & S Roadways withdrew vital sponsorship.

Both were unhappy at club founder and chairman Harry Williams' unilateral decision not to apply for the UniBond Northern Premier League status.

At the end of the season there will be a major restructuring of the non-league pyramid with a rare chance for a number of NWCL teams to step up into the UniBond. In not sending in an application the club effectively closed the door on themselves.
