REGARDING the article on the opening of the Bargain Booze off-licence at Roe Lee in Blackburn (LET October 30), I am the licensee of Edward's Wines, the well-established off-licence already situated only a few hundred yards from the new Bargain Booze.

In the article, Matt Leach of Bargain Booze, when asked about the sale of alcohol to under-age drinkers, made the comment that they are "...a responsible retailer" and that it would be "far more likely that anyone under-age would seek to buy from an independent retailer."

Being one of these "independent retailers" we would like to point out that this is totally untrue as we are very familiar with the local young people and, therefore, know them, their parents, what schools they attend and, most importantly, their age.

We have seen these children grow up. They themselves know not to attempt to purchase alcohol from us as we know them.
