EAST Lancashire holiday company MyTravel is continuing with its operations in Turkey despite the bombings in Istanbul.

A company spokeswoman said the group, and the rest of the British tour operators, have been extra vigilant in doing business in Turkey on the recommendation of the UK Government due to the Iraq war.

The company, which has offices at Helmshore and at the Globe Centre at Accrington, will abide by any decision made by the Government following the bomb blasts believed to have been carried out by the al-Qaeda terrorist network, she added.

"We just have to wait and see," she said.

MyTravel has temporarily ceased booking travels to Turkey at the moment as it only offers summer holiday packages.

The spokeswoman said Turkey had remained a popular summer destination for tourists even during the Iraq war.

"It wasn't hugely affected by the Iraq war," she said.

She declined to comment whether the bombings will negatively affect the group's wider business as tourists shun foreign travel for fear of renewed terror attacks.

And the Association of British Travel Agents believes that the UK travel market is unlikely to be adversely affected by the terror attacks in Turkey.

An ABTA spokesman said that the market has proved to be "resilient" in the face of various terror threats over the years.

"It could hit travel plans to Turkey. But it shouldn't make an impact on the general travel business worldwide," he said.

"The terror attacks affect the destination itself, but not the whole market. They won't stop people from going abroad. People will just go somewhere else," he added.
