Many people presume singer Charlie Landsborough is an American. But his origins are much closer to home, writes JOHN ANSON

THE first thing that surprises you about Charlie Landsborough is the voice -- not the singing voice which has won him fans all over the world, but the speaking voice.

"Oh there's many a woman who has been disappointed I don't sound like I sing," laughs Charlie, his Liverpudlian brogue unmistakable.

"I think for some reason people expect me to be American.

"My son was stopped for speeding once and when the policeman asked him his name he said 'oh like the American country singer."

Charlie Landsborough is definitely not American, nor is he really a country singer.

He sees himself more a purveyor or ballads and heartfelt songs that are based on emotion and his experiences of life.

"In my songs I suppose I'm trying to communicate common emotions and feelings to people and I hope they can relate to that.

He will be coming to Preston Guild Hall next Tuesday and is looking forward to renewing old acquaintances.

"It's a smashing venue and I always enjoy playing there," he said. "Plus it's nice and easy for home."

Charlie attracts a diverse audience, many of whom who have grown up with his songs.

"It is predominantly an older crowd," he said, "but I do get a lot of children in and some younger people too.

"I remember one young fella coming up to me after a gig and saying 'my mother dragged me to see you but I thought you were great.'

"Things like that mean a lot."

From humble beginnings singing on Liverpool's Dock Road, Charlie Landsborough has travelled the world, with his songs being covered by many other artists.

"It's all a far cry from when I started.

"I got a £1 for playing in a pub.

"My first microphone stand was a broom handle, then I progressed to an adapted stand from a budgie cage.

"I even used to use a tractor wheel before I got my first proper microphone stand."

Charlie bases many of his songs on his experiences.

"For me songwriting's a very chaotic process," he said.

"Sometimes I may start with a bit of a tune but sometimes there's nothing there at all and I take my imagination for a walk and see what I discover along the way."
