THE search is on for more volunteers to join Lancashire's army of police independent custody visitors.

Lancashire already has 60 lay visitors who turn up unannounced in police stations across the county to check on detainee treatment and conditions.

The volunteers, selected from the community, work in pairs and carry out visits at all times of the day and night.

Candidates should be aged over 18 years and must have no direct involvement in the criminal justice system.

Lancashire Police Authority member Gail Stanley said: "We have recently seen changes in the law that highlight human rights.

"The treatment of those in police custody is one key indicator of the extent to which we are embracing this culture of rights.

"This scheme not only offers transparency but provides extra protection to detainees. Local people will be giving something back to the communities they serve by providing vital independent scrutiny."
