WE recently attended a Christmas party organised by Fairfield special care baby unit for children who spent time in there. While I was there I was horrified to here that the unit is under threat of closure. Our nearest unit would then be at North Manchester General.
I am contacting my MP and would urge others to do likewise. If we want to save our special care unit we must protest as loudly as possible.
The nurses and doctors at Fairfield do a fantastic job of caring for the babies and supporting the families. We couldn't have coped for the five weeks that our daughter was in hospital without them. How much more difficult would this time have been for us if we had had to travel further to see our baby?
Given that one in 10 babies born in the UK have to go into a special care unit, why is our unit under threat of closure?
