REGARDING a recent letter asking why English is a necessity and the fact that Mr Nagdee considered it 'racist' for this to apply. I would like to inform him that my son, a self-employed plasterer of 20 years, has recently emigrated to Australia.

This, after a wait of three years involving a complicated system of application for a visa, because he had only gained an O-level in English when he left school and not an A-level. He had to take an exam at Manchester University set by the authorities. In this, he had to achieve 60 per cent success level in each of four modules and, to add to this, he had to pay a sizeable sum of money.
