IT is well known the Liberal Democrats are anti-American. But the latest comments from the party's North West MEP Christ Davies are deeply insulting.

In November Mr Davies said: "The presence of George W Bush provides the best argument I know for early adoption of the draft European constitution." Mr Davies craves publicity, but his public standing diminishes greatly when he abuses the UK's most loyal ally.

I also deplore his implicit support for the European constitution, which will give sweeping new powers to the EU over our justice system and Parliament. European judges will, in effect, be able to overturn vast swathes British laws. This must be fought against tooth and nail.

Furthermore the constitution significantly increases the powers of the European Parliament and the European Commission.

Like Labour, the far left Liberal Democrats cannot be trusted to defend Britain's powers of self-government from Brussels. Yet again Mr Davies, an ardent supporter of the Euro, is hopelessly out of touch with public opinion.
