FURTHER to Councillor Khan's letter (Letters November 25) on the allocation of funds to local community centres. May I, on behalf of the Roe Lee Area Residents Association, put the record straight. While agreeing with the decision to bid for the extra government funding, its distribution leaves much to be desired.

Coun Khan stated: "The council has been able to allocate more than £40,000 to support the Barlow Institute and building work for a new community base at Roe Lee."

I can only speak for Roe Lee and it has, indeed, acquired a new base, thanks to Twin Valley Homes, who placed a block of bedsits at our disposal. The only building work, which presumably Coun Khan was referring to, was the removal of a dividing wall and for which £1,000 was given in part-payment.

The association was very grateful for any funding it has received, but it should be noted that this represents only a very small amount compared to those received by other centres.

However, we now have a base, albeit after eight long years of dogged effort by the Association Committee.
