A BLACKBURN thoroughfare was transformed into a shopping winter wonderland for a day.

Stalls selling a variety of wares for Christmas presents and decorations were erected on Church Street.

The traditional Christmas Street Market was organised by Blackburn with Darwen Council as part of its 'Street Life' series of events.

All the stall-holders were there voluntarily from Blackburn market and the event was given an extra special feel with carol singers, festive food and drink, Victorian fancy dress and an "olde" fun fair.

The market sold Christmas trees, holly, toys and computer accessories among other items, and was enjoyed by a steady stream of shoppers.

Stall-holder Vivienne Smith, from John Smith and Sons, in Blackburn Market, said she was pleased to be part of the market.

Vivienne said: "I think it's a very good idea and brings back the old traditions of the market.

"It's been well worth all the effort that has gone into it and hopefully its going to continue into next year.

"There has been quite a lot on interest but hopefully it will get more popular through word-of-mouth."

The Christmas Street Market takes place three more times before Christmas. It is next Saturday; Wednesday, December 17, and Saturday, December 20, and runs from 10am to 5pm.
